Ryley Carlock Environmental Practice Expands

Phoenix, Ariz.--Ryley Carlock & Applewhite, known in the Western United States for its legal practice in Water, Energy, Resources, and Environmental law, today announced it is joined by Albert H. "Bert" Acken as a shareholder in the firm.

"This is a great development for the law firm," said Rodolfo Parga, Jr., Managing Shareholder. "As a full service firm we are known for many areas of law. One in which we have enjoyed a great reputation for decades is in the environmental area. To have the good fortune to add someone with the personal and practice caliber Bert possesses is a great development."

Among Acken's areas of expertise are environmental policy making, permitting and compliance, where he helps clients with respect to numerous regulatory regimes, including the federal, state and local statutes dealing with Air Quality, Water Pollution, Environmental Impact Studies and Solid and Hazardous Waste. "EPA's prolific development of new requirements for air quality health and regional haze standards and stormwater runoff create great challenges for our clients, as well as for state and local environmental agencies that are on the front lines. Bert is a great addition to our team as we help our clients meet those challenges." said Jim Sanderson, Chair of the firm's Public Policy practice group.

Acken has also represented clients seeking to add to the region's electrical generation and transmission infrastructure in matters before the Arizona Corporation Commission and the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee. Acken previously practiced at the Lewis and Roca law firm in Phoenix.

"Siting new utility infrastructure to meet increasing demands and renewable energy standards and goals is challenging, but the ACC and the Siting Comittee have a good track record of balancing competing interests" Acken said.

His experience will also support Ryley Carlock's regional corporate, real estate and banking practices where environmental due diligence is required in business and real property transactions for real estate investment trusts, lenders, and prospective purchasers.

"The focus of our growth has been strategic. We build on our strengths," said W. Scott Jenkins, Jr. Ryley Carlock's Hiring Shareholder. "Bert is a very successful environmental and energy siting lawyer and really adds to and compliments our capabilities in Arizona and Colorado. Bert personifies the kind of quality person and lawyer we seek at Ryley," he said.

"I am delighted to join a law firm with such a talented team. My clients will greatly benefit from the resources at Ryley Carlock and I am looking forward to building long lasting friendships here," said Acken.

He is Chair-elect of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Arizona (ENRLS) and is also a governor-appointed member of the Arizona Mining Advisory Council.

Acken is a Cum Laude graduate of Northwestern University School of Law. He did graduate study in public and environmental affairs at Indiana University and holds a degree in geology from The George Washington University.
