Biography

Matthew’s practice focuses on water law and environmental matters. Working with the firm’s award-winning water and environmental lawyers, he assists municipalities, mines, conservation districts, ranchers, and private property owners with a wide variety of complex, intersecting issues. In addition, Matthew is involved in Colorado’s active brewing industry.

Water & Environmental Law. Matthew’s water law experience includes representation of parties in water applications covering senior and junior rights, exchanges, expansions, historical use quantifications, and state law v. federal law issues. Matthew is often involved in opposition cases including filing notices, attending status conferences with the court, preparing and submitting comments, negotiating agreeable terms, and when necessary, preparing for trial. In the area of environmental law, Matthew assists clients with issues related to water quality, mining, remediation, right-of-access and permitting. His environmental work brings him into frequent contact with state and federal agencies.

Election Law in the Environmental Context. Matthew has experience with election law, including initiatives concerning environmental issues. To advocate for clients’ interests, he appears and argues before Colorado’s Title Board, defending certain election initiatives and seeking to strike down others. To further these ends, he wrote and filed briefs before the Colorado Supreme Court on key initiatives.

Previous Water & Environmental Law Experience. Before joining the firm, Matthew worked in the Office of the Attorney General’s Natural Resources & Environmental Section. His experience at the AG’s Office culminated in a year-long appointment as a Fellow, where he worked on a variety of cases that spanned many aspects of water rights management and environmental issues in Colorado. Before that, as an intern at Denver Water, Matthew gained key insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by large water utilities. While in law school, Matthew served as the Managing Editor of the Environmental Law Review and as an officer in the Environmental Law Society.

Brewery Representation. As a member of the Brewers Association and the American Homebrewers Association, Matthew has a keen interest in the art and business of making and selling beer as well as the legal intricacies involved with running a successful brewery or distillery. He is active in Colorado’s bustling micro-, craft and independent brewing scene, attending festivals and interfacing with brew masters and brewery owners. Recently, he became a recognized judge in the Beer Judge Certification Program. For brewery businesses, Matthew is capable of serving in a general counsel role, helping both established and startup operations navigate the myriad regulations and challenges impacting the industry.

Personal Interests. Combining his taste for beer and his penchant for DIY projects, Matthew is an avid home brewer. His appetite for good beer is complemented perfectly by a love of cooking at home and exploring Colorado’s eclectic restaurant scene. To burn off all the excess calories, Matthew maintains a daily running habit; in 2015, he completed his first marathon, surviving the popular Denver Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, and he has plans to run more races in the future. During college football season, Matthew can be found rooting fiercely for his alma mater, the University of Georgia Bull Dogs. He also is an ardent fan of the Broncos, Braves and Falcons.
